Target Center has been the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves since the arena opened in 1990. Target Cebter is a few blocks away from Target Field, home of the American League Minnesota Twins.

The team played in the Metrodome for one season before moving to Target Center.

In 1987, the National Basketball Association granted four new franchises. The four franchises were the Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have not won a National Basketball Championship. In 1996 the Timberwolves qualified for the NBA playoffs for the first time and qualified eight years in a row. The first seven years they lost in the first round. In 2004 the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Denver Nuggets in the first round and the Sacramento Kings in the conference semifinals. They were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals. The Minnesota Timberwolves have not made it back to the playoffs since the loss in 2004.
